Heritage Steam

Duncan Pittock has built up an interesting and varied collection of portable steam engines. A number of these have been restored and are in steam. He also has a ploughing engine which is currently being rebuilt. Details of the engines are given below, listed under their respective manufacturers. We hope to add some photographs in due course.

This engine, a recent acquisition, was built only a few miles away at Paxman's Colchester works. It spent its working life in Chile and returned to the UK in December 2005. Fortunately it is very complete and in excellent condition. As at Spring 2006 it is undergoing a full programme of restoration. All being well we hope to complete the project and have the engine back in steam this summer.

Traction Engine

Ransomes Sims & Jefferies of Ipswich

Number 24423 Boiler / Build No: H504 60 BHP   RCT ex-Works: 23 July 1912

A direct ploughing traction engine originally built for and exported to Argentina. Unlike most British ploughing engines, which hauled ploughs by a cable attached to a winding drum slung under the boiler barrel, this type hauled ploughs attached to a drawbar at the rear of the engine. Currently No 24423 is undergoing a major rebuild in our East Mersea workshops.

Portables Available for Purchase

We are willing to consider serious offers for two of the above engines which do not form part of the long-term plan for the collection. One is the 1925 Ransomes Sims & Jefferies, Boiler No 0720, which is very complete and original. The other is the 1911 8NHP Marshall, No 57121.
